Term 3 Assignment – Going Beyond

Why do people explore? What drives them to want to go further and discover more? What qualities do those who explore and push the boundaries have? How does exploration change the lives and understandings of people? What else is left for humans to explore? How have advances in technology enabled us to go further?

This term you will investigate how people throughout time have always questioned, explored and searched, and why they will continue to do so.

You will look at how explorers of the past have influenced our understandings about the world and beyond. You’ll look at how our knowledge is still being challenged and extended by today’s explorers and will continue to be formed by the explorers of the future.

Before you start check out Dara O Briain’s animation on The Story of  Exploration and for a snapshot of some of today’s explorers go to National Geographic Live! : Stories of Exploration and Discovery. While there isn’t any narration the Timeline : The History of Space Exploration shows how quickly space exploration developed.

We want you to choose an Australian for your research.

For example, Graeme Clarke’s bionic ear, or William Farrer’s work on disease-resistant wheat strains.

Or an area Australians have worked.

For example:

  • the mapping of global geological activity
  • Antarctic research such as monitoring plankton levels
  • the Human Genome Project
  • the investigation of the living conditions of extremophiles (look it up) by ecologists

You could also explore areas of where collaborative research is trying to solve problems in medicine and ecology such as climate modelling, investigating the effects of over-fishing, developing alternative energy sources to generate electricity or the development of different techniques to perform particular tasks.
